Flame Sensing Kits are mid-tier and sit between Match-Lit and Electronic Ignition in the hierarchy of fire pit ignition.
However, this catagory can cause some confusion because many Flame Sensing Kits are equipped with Push-Button Spark Ignition, there are also Match-Lit configurations, and all Electronic Ignition systems are effectively ‘Flame Sensing’.
So What Is a Flame Sensing Kit?
As the name suggests, a Flame Sensing Kit monitors or ‘senses’ the flame. Should the flame extinguish, the sensors automatically trigger a shutdown of the gas supply to the burner, preventing hazardous gas accumulation, providing enhanced safety.
How does Flame Sensing Work?
Basically, when a thermocouple (sensor) gets hot from the fire pit flame, it creates a small electrical signal that tells the system that the flame is present. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools down, the signal stops, and this tells the system there is no flame. The ‘no flame’ status triggers the system to shut off the gas to the burner.

Flame Sensing Kits – What’s Included?
These pre-assembled kits include a pan, burner, ignition/sensor assembly, and valve control box.
Propane models also feature an air mixer (if required), and those designed for small propane tanks may include the necessary connections.
Quick Comparison of Brands

American Fire Products Kits are CSA Certified and are shipped ready for use with a 20-lb LP tank. However, they include a conversion kit for use with Natural Gas, ensuring easy connection to your gas feed.

HPC Fire Kits are CSA Certified and come ready-assembled. Only the Small LP tank option includes connections from the valve within the control box to the gas feed. Round and square kits provide the choice of Standard or Torpedo Penta Burners; all other configurations feature the Torpedo Burner alone.

The Outdoor Plus offers LC Certified Flame Sensing Kits with push-button spark or match-lit ignition. Choose from Standard, Stainless Steel Bullet, or Brass Bullet Burners with the new Aqua Guard Design.
